Yummy vs. Yucky - Hayden's Catalog of Deliciousness

Hayden has recently discovered how to describe foods he likes or dislikes in unequivocal terms that Mom and Dad can understand.  Yummy and Yucky.  There's also 'So Yummy' and 'Too Yucky' for those times when emphasis is really needed.

Here are some things that Hayden has classified as Yummy and/or Yucky.

YUMMY
Lemon Gatorade (so yummy)
Grape Gatorade
Apple Juice
Milk
Boogers
Chicken
Steak
Green Beans
Corn
Cupcakes (so yummy)
Salt and Pepper (mix)
Sugar (granulated or powdered)
Marshmallows
Eggs
Sausage

YUCKY
Dad's fizzy water (too yucky)
Broccoli
Brown things
Hayden (too yucky)
Turtles (the animal)
Pickles
Onions

Hayden's been burned by some 'yucky' stuff before.  In fact, on the day this post was written, Dad tried to give Hayden some water in the car ride home from school - Hayden was clearly thirsty, but he was suspicious of Dad's offer.  He looked at the bottle of water and said "is this yucky?"  Dad knew what Hayden really wanted to know was "father, is this sparkling water or is it flat/still water?"  The answer Hayden received, though, was "no Hayden - NOT yucky".

Hayden drank it and hopefully won't automatically distrust Dad next time.

What Is My Kid Doing In That VW Commercial?!?

There's a VW commercial that played at the Super Bowl.  It has a little kid dressed up like Darth Vader and he's walking around the house using The Force to try and make things do his bidding.

It's hilarious, and although I know in my heart it's quite likely that EVERY little boy does this, in my head I can't see anyone but Hayden when I see this commercial.

My favorite part is when MicroDarth runs out to use The Force on The Car and dodges The Dad refusing The Hug to get there.

Side note:  The little kid they got to play MicroDarth is an awesome actor!  So much emotion conveyed without any facial expressions at all - all body language.

Hayden IS Batboy

While visiting a friend's house recently, Hayden discovered a pile of costumes.  One in particular stood out to him - Batman.

The closest Hayden's ever gotten to seeing Batman is the lego version on some pajamas.  No formal viewing of Bruce Wayne or Stately Wayne Manor or Alfred or any of that stuff.

That's important information because you would never guess it from this photo:

Being a Superhero is 10% super powers...90% heart
He put that thing on and Hayden *became* Batman.

Two minutes later he was a Police Officer.  Kids are fickle.

Good And Bad 'Naked Time'

Ok - here's the situation.  Single parents have to know what this is all about.  You get NO time to do anything for yourself.

We're not squawking, just mentioning it as a matter of course.

Mom and Dad are not single parents, but from time to time we do get a brief glimpse into that world

Also important to know is that Hayden likes to be naked.  Every chance he gets he's bolting up the hallway after going to the bathroom or sneaking out of the bathtub when our backs are turned just to see how far he can get.  It's funny and frustrating and it's one of those things that makes Hayden the crazy little guy that he is.

GOOD NAKED TIME
Mom went to Chicago for the day and Dad stayed at home with Hayden.  We had a BIG day planned - breakfast, movies, swimming, naptime, grocery store, etc.  Somewhere in there, that single parent might have to take care of some personal business (of the bathroom variety).

Dad left Hayden watching a story on TV at roughly 10:30:00 - at roughly 10:30:30 Hayden was naked and bouncing on the bed in the guest room.  He was having a hell of a good time.  This is good/acceptable naked time.

Perhaps he has a future at Chippendale's...we're not sure, but we're not going to rule it out either.

BAD NAKED TIME
The very next day, Hayden's friend Cayla came to visit.  At some point, Hayden and Cayla went back to Hayden's room and one of them came out of there wearing clothes...the other was Hayden.

Mom saw Hayden running down the hallway naked as the day he was born and had to explain that there's a time for 'naked time' and this was not that time.

Cayla just laughed, but we're a little fearful that he might develop a reputation before he's old enough to know what a reputation can do to/for you.

Hayden And The Narwhal

While learning about all the animals that live in the arctic, one animal in particular struck a chord with Hayden and he got a SERIOUS case of 'gotta have it' syndrome.

We checked all of the regular haunts where we go for little plastic critters - no dice.

Problem: nobody has this flippin' narwhal, and we think we figured out why:  It was created in 1997 and supplies are limited.

Anyway, Grandpa and Uncle Drew were driving from Texas to California and taking the Pacific Coast Highway right through Monterey.  I asked if they would be kind enough to check out the aquarium gift shop and see what they have to say about it.  It was at this point that Dad made a classic blunder.  He promised Hayden that Grandpa was going to bring him a Narwhal.

Monterey Bay Aquarium's gift shop was a bust.  But there was a silver lining: Uncle Drew thought Dad was messing with him - sending him on a 'snipe hunt' for a toy that didn't exist of an animal that didn't exist, but the gift shop corroborated Dad's story that the Narwhal is, in fact, a real animal and apologized that the toy version was out of stock...so Dad was off to the Interwebs to find the magic.

Amazon had 2 left.  5 minutes later, they had 1 left.

It was delivered to Grandma and Grandpa's house so Dad wouldn't look like a total chump and when Grandpa finally got it into Hayden's hands he freaked out.  In a good way.

Hayden's Winter Program

Hayden's school has a 'Winter Program' where the kids spend a few weeks learning about things related to winter/arctic/cold stuff and then sing songs about them.  It's quite fun, and Hayden's class had two songs to sing.

Song One - 'It Is Snowing' (to the tune of 'Frere Jacques')

It is snowing,
It is snowing,
On my head...
On my head...
I need a hat,
I need a hat,
On my head.

There are a few more body parts that get snow on them, but the theme is the same.

Song Two - 'Walking In The Arctic' (to the tune of 'Walking In The Arctic')

Walking in the arctic,
Walking in the arctic,
What do we see?
What do we see?
A great big penguin
A great big penguin
And he says Staaaand UP!
Staaaand UP!
Waddle waddle this way...
Waddle waddle this way...
Waddle waddle that way...
Waddle waddle that way...
And sit down.
And sit down.
Hayden using his binoculars in The Arctic

There are a LOT of animals in the arctic, apparently.  And they all seem to want you to stand up, then do something this way then do something that way and then sit down.

Hayden really enjoyed singing to everyone and we were glad to see him participate in something that took this much preparation and practice because he was able to see the result of all of the time they put into getting ready for the program.

Taking 'I've Got Your Nose' to the Next Level

Dad has made a huge mistake.  HUGE.

Several weeks ago, Dad was playing with Hayden and decided to pull the ol' "I've got your nose" trick out of the bag.  You know the one - where your thumb is tucked in between the index and middle finger on your hand and looks like the victim's nose.

Well, Hayden picked up that little torch and became an expert in no time and then added his own particular and peculiar little twist:  he pretends to throw it away.

Hayden does have one slight misconception though.  He tries to actually remove your nose from your face.  He's very strong and very determined and very ruthless.  And once he's content that he has your nose in hand, he does a full Major League windup and throws it as far as his imagination will allow it to go.

We can try to catch it, we can try to block the throw, but all that does is initiate a do-over.  And do-overs are rough because your nose is already hurting from the first attempt.

It's best to just let the monster win.
